All about Building Circles

At Building Circles, our focus is on creating opportunities for social relationships and experiences for adults with learning disabilities, to tackle isolation and loneliness and to make sure that everyone has a place in their community.

Our co-produced mission statement

To feel empowered as a person with a learning disability, through opportunities to meet new people, make new friends and have fun doing things we enjoy; and to be equipped with the skills to make safe, healthy and informed choices in our community.

We strongly believe in the power of co-production and collaboration when it comes to anything we organise within the charity. All our social events and activities are put forward to our participants as options first, and we encourage input for any future activities.

We are driven by the social model of disability; believing that people are disabled by the barriers of society, rather than their own individual selves.

What we do

We work alongside volunteers to deliver Social Buddies and Gig Buddies Gloucestershire, and we have experienced staff members that deliver our direct and group training sessions.

Social Buddies is a programme for people to go out and enjoy their hobbies and interests during the day with someone that shares the same interests. The training we provide is focused around healthy relationships and wellbeing. Gig Buddies Gloucestershire is a country-wide project which enables adults with learning disabilities to see live music and stay up late!

How Building Circles Began

Frances Watson MBE, having worked extensively with individuals facing special educational needs (SEN) and severe disabilities, recognised the profound isolation experienced by these individuals due to limited contact outside of paid carers.

Motivated by a desire for positive change, Frances founded Building Circles to empower individuals with learning disabilities by fostering friendships and community participation. Building Circles gained independent charity status in October 2007 and has been growing ever since.

Our Impact

Our charity has grown from strength to strength, and we now have over 35 friendships and various social activities running, with further ones about to start.
